Proteases, sometimes called peptidases or proteinases, are a class of enzymes that break down proteins into shorter polypeptide chains or into their constituent amino acids. 
Proteases are widely used commercially as a part of laundry detergents and as a food tenderizer. 
In the wild, when secreted by bacteria and fungi, they play an important role in the recycling of carbon and nitrogen. 
This protease originates from a bacterial source and is effective on a wide range of proteins.
