Carolina ChemKits: Soap Synthesis
One of civilization's oldest chemical syntheses is re-created in this lab experiment. Students perform the process of saponification and produce a usable soap product. This process of making soap uses coconut oil, a triglyceride, which is hydrolyzed by sodium hydroxide and heat. A great biochemistry lab for physical science, chemistry, and other upper-level science classes. Requires 1 class period to complete. Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in pairs. DOT Class: Corrosive.
