Garage Physics: Soda Center of Mass Kit
Balance a 2-L soda bottle on a board in mid-air! Students engage in exciting activities to explore center of mass, balance, and stability. They are introduced to the universal nature of the center of mass and perform simple calculations to determine the theoretical center of mass. Supports NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards®) 3-PS2-2 Make observations and/or measurements of an object's motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion, MS-PS2-2 Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object's motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object, and HS-PS2-2 Use mathematical representations to support the claim that the total momentum of a system of objects is conserved when there is no net force on the system. A 2-L bottle and weights are needed but not included (rocks, coins, toys, etc., can be used as weights or see item #751438). Includes enough materials for 1 group of students and an instruction manual with NGSS correlations and assembly instructions. Designed for elementary and middle school but suitable for older students studying mathematics, physics, and physical science.
