Set up DC motors (permanent magnet, series-wound, or shunt-wound) and generators (AC or DC) to teach current, Faraday's law, Lenz's law, motors, or generators. Both the magnets and coil mounts slide in and out of slots on the base. The distance between the magnet and the rotor armature can be adjusted by rotating the magnet. Depending on the configuration with or without the meters, 2 to 8 connecting cables may be needed. The rotor axle is mounted on factory-adjusted cone bearings that should not need further attention. Note: It is normal to see sparking at the commutator when the motor is running. Accumulating black deposits may be carefully removed with fine emery paper.

Includes detailed instructions. Power source (6- to 12-V DC; 2 to 5 A, item #757100), connecting cables (items #756523 and #756515), and meters (items #369570 and #369580) are needed for advanced experiments but not included. An adjustable power source (item #757213) is also recommended.

Helps you teach the following Next Generation Science Standards® Student Performance Expectations:

  • Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions (MS-PS2)
Ask questions about data to determine the factors that affect the strength of electric and magnetic forces. (MS-PS2-3)
  • Energy (HS-PS3)
Design, build, and refine a device that works within given constraints to convert 1 form of energy into another form of energy. (HS-PS3-3)
