These colorful protein models illustrate how the linear polypeptide chain in an amino acid sequence folds into the stable α-helix structure to form a protein’s secondary structure. Both a-helix plaster models are derived from helix E (amino acids 58-74) of the b-globin protein. One model features these 17 amino acids with side chains.

The other model features the same 17 amino acids without side chains, allowing students the opportunity to focus on the hydrogen bonding that stabilized the backbone. The Alpha Helix Models are most effective when used in conjunction with 3-D Molecular Designs’ Beta Sheet Models and Alpha Helix Beta Sheet Construction Kit©.

They are made of plaster in ball and stick format and follows the standard CPK color scheme. They will break if dropped, held tightly or handled roughly. Their PDB file is 1A3N.pdb.
