Cypridina hilgendorfii. Collected from the sea near Japan, these desiccated organisms provide an example of a luciferin-luciferase system not requiring ATP for bioluminescence. Used by soldiers in World War II to provide a dim night-light; simply crush the animals in sand and water to get a blue luminescence.
