Thames and Kosmos® Robotics Workshop with Micro:Bit
Packed with hundreds of durable, reusable components, this comprehensive and engaging curriculum STEM kit gives young learners the tools to explore the field of robotic engineering like never before.
The kit includes instructions to build 14 simple motorized robots with sensors that can control them. And, with over 100 snap-together, versatile building pieces, students can also experiment and construct robots of their own design.
Once they’ve built their robots, they’ll add code to program them and bring them to life.
Robotics Workshop utilizes the award-winning micro:bit, a tiny computer that students can program using the free web or app-based platform MakeCode.
Through MakeCode, students can learn to code using easy-to-understand visual block-based coding and then stretch themselves to learn the most relevant coding languages of the tech industry: Python and JavaScript.
A 32-page full-color manual and tons of online resources feature step-by-step building instructions and explanations for how to program and operate the robot models.
Tech needed: A tablet running iOS or Android or a PC with internet access. MakeCode is free and web-based, so there are no PC system requirements.
Robotic components:
The micro:bit
This is the robot’s brain, eyes, ears, voice, and more! This pocket-sized circuit board hosts the programmed code and is housed in a durable smart controller. Upload code to the micro:bit with the included USB cord or wirelessly via Bluetooth low-energy connection. This mini-computer has a built-in array of 25 LEDs and on-board sensors that measure light, temperature, magnetism, movement, sound, and more.
Ultrasonic sensor
Avoid obstacles with the ultrasonic sensor that works like a sonar system and helps the robots gauge distances and determine where objects are. Two ultrasonic sensors included.
Servo motor
The precision motor allows the robot to make accurate and powerful movements with complete motor control!
Direct-drive motor
The two powerful direct-drive motors bring motion to the robots. Connect the motors to gears, wheels, and other pieces to move the robots in many ways.
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries
Includes two rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, optimizing the length of use.
